ASTHMA

If you are suffering from repeated attacks of cough, chest tightness, wheezing and difficulty in breathing you may be suffering from Asthma.

WHAT IS ASTHMA & HOW IS ASTHMA CAUSED ?

Asthma is a disease affecting the airways that carry air in and out of your lungs. People who suffer from this chronic condition are said to be asthmatic. Asthma is caused by inflammation of the airways. The muscles around the inflamed airways are irritated, and causes them to contract (squeeze) which leads to narrowing of the airways. It becomes difficult for air to get in and out through these narrowed airways leading to wheeze and breathlessness. The inflammation of airways also causes the mucous lining of the airways to make extra mucus which causes cough and further irritation of the airways.

WHAT ARE TYPES OF ASTHMA ?

Based on the severity and duration of the symptoms asthma is classified into :

1) Intermittent, 2) mild persistent 3) moderate and 4) severe.

If asthma is due to an allergy it is called as atopic asthma and the person is called as atopic individual. Atopic asthma is the most commonest type of childhood asthma, Asthma due to chronic exposure to chemical fumes or allergens in work place is called as Occupational asthma, which is the commonest type of adulthood asthma.

DOES ASTHMA AFFECT ALL?

Now a days Asthma has become a very common problem and is affecting many people. Asthma can start at any age, but is more common in childhood.10- 15% of children and 5 to 10% of adults have asthma. Asthma may run in families and has genetic factors too.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ASTHMA ?

1) Cough, 2) wheeze, 3) breathless, 4) tightness in the chest.

Symptoms can range from mild to severe and vary from time to time in the same person and between two different people. Each episode of asthma symptoms may last for an hour or so, or may persist for days to weeks until treated. Patients tend to develop mild symptoms from time to time. And a triggering factor can stimulate a severe episode of attack. Asthmatics usually experience these symptoms most frequently during the night and the early morning.

WHAT MAKES ASTHMA SYMPTOMS WORSE ?

As Asthma is a recurring disease and exposure to certain factors can trigger an acute attack of asthma or can make the symptoms worse, avoiding such triggering factors helps in reducing the frequency of attack and can keep the symptoms in control. Certain factors that may trigger asthma symptoms include the following:

  1. Infections of chest or common cold and cough can trigger an episode of asthma or can make it worse.
  2. Exercise can make an episode of asthma worse, but regular exercise along with breathing exercise and yoga are good for asthma and can be practised during normal days.
  3. Pollens and Moulds: Asthma is often worse in the hay fever season. If a person is allergic to pollen, inhalation of pollen triggers an immune reaction which leads to inflammation of airways and causes asthma.
  4. Emotions: emotional trauma and stress can trigger an attack of asthma or can make the symptoms worse.
  5. Smoking and Dust: smoking and even passive inhalation of cigarette smoke too can make asthma worse. And inhalation of fumes from paints, other chemicals fumes, solvents and air pollution and exposure to dust can trigger an acute episode of asthma or can worsen the symptoms of asthma. Increase in air pollution and dust may be a reason for increase in incidence of asthma.
  6. Allergies to Animals: some people notice that their symptoms become worse when close to certain animals like cats, dogs, and horses, because they may be allergic to the hair of the animals and during an episode of asthma such contact should be avoided.
  7. House Dust Mite: If you are allergic to house dust mite ( a tiny creature which lives in mattresses, pillows, soft toys and other fabrics on bed and sofas in your home), it may make asthma symptoms worse or trigger an attack of asthma.

HOW IS ASTHMA DIAGNOSED ?

Based on the symptoms, the history and by examination of patient diagnosis is easily made by a doctor. The commonly used test to confirm the diagnosis is spirometry. A chest X-Ray may also be performed.
A allergy test may be performed to detect the substances a person is allergic to which may trigger asthma attack.
